Product Review: Beauty Blender vs Miracle Complexion

Once a week I sanitize my whole make up kit with 99% alcohol and a brush cleaner. I believe sanitation is one of the most important things about being a make up artist and a crucial way to keep your brushes in good shape and germ-free. One of my favorite things to do while I’m passing the time cleaning is to watch make up tutorials on YouTube. I know what you’re thinking, I’m a total make up nerd – guilty as charged! But there are some incredibly talented artists on YouTube and I find that no matter how established or talented you may be, there is always room for growth. I’ve learned so much while watching these videos and I see them as a fun way to further educate myself as a make up artist. I love looking up videos on product reviews, observing new techniques and discovering best deals on certain products.

A while ago, while watching YouTube videos I discovered this magical little pink sponge known as the Beauty Blender. For those of you who don’t live-breath-sleep make up like I do, the Beauty Blender is a reusable sponge which was designed to help create a perfectly even and dewy foundation application.

If you look closer you'll see the Beauty Blender. Been using it since 2013.

You are meant to use it damp (not wet) so that it reaches its full size and doesn’t soak up the foundation. It has become so popular over the years that every make up artist I know has at least one of them in their kit. There have been several attempts at “dupes” but none of them have really held up until I discovered the Miracle Complexion Sponge.

This sponge is currently being called the next best thing and it is 4 times cheaper! FOUR TIMES CHEAPER, I repeat!! I decided I had to purchase it and do the experiment myself, and of course share it with all of you guys!

You can buy the 2 sponges from www.mupstore.com or visit their branch at Makati or Quezon City.
You can buy the 2 sponges from www.mupstore.com or visit one of their stores at Makati or Quezon City.

So, here are some similarities and differences between the two:

DIFFERENCES:

1. Price: The beauty blender will cost you $20 USD for one sponge while the miracle complexion sponge is only $5 USD! In Pesos, that’s 900 vs 225. A difference of 675 pesos!!

2. Shape: Both sponges have a round egg shape and a pointed tip on the end, but the Miracle Complexion Sponge has a flat side to it that the Beauty Blender does not have.

3. Product waste: The Beauty Blender’s special ingredients make it so that you can completely wring out the water and not worry about the product being soaked up by the sponge. The Miracle Complexion Sponge tends to soak up a bit more water and product.

SIMILARITIES:

1. Texture: They both feel very soft, bouncy and squeezable. It’s pretty impressive how similar Real Techniques was able to design it to the Beauty Blender.

2. End Result: They both do what they say they will do. As far as the foundation goes, I find that both of them create the same dewy and even finish.

3. Size: Both of them are smaller when they are dry and grow bigger in size as you place them in water. Which is not the case for the other attempted dupes.

So, which one is better? I say its up to the customer. The only real difference I can say after having experiencing them both, is the shape. If you prefer a sponge with a flat side as an option, then save yourself the 675 pesos (15USD) and get yourself the Miracle Complexion Sponge. If you find that shape awkward to hold in your hand, then you’ll have to cough up the extra bucks and get yourself the original Beauty Blender. Sometimes you gotta just trust your gut and say -Nothing is better than the real thing.

I’d love to hear from you guys! What do you think, have you tried either sponge and prefer one or the other? Let me know in the comments below.
